Esméralda,abeautiful16-year-oldgypsywithakindandgenerousheart,capturestheheartsofmanymenbutespeciallyQuasimodo’sadoptedfather,ClaudeFrollo.Frolloistornbetweenhislustandtherulesofthechurch.HeordersQuasimodotogether.Quasimodoiscaughtandwhippedandorderedtobetieddownintheheat.Esméraldaseeinghisthirst,offershimwater.Itsavesher,forshecapturestheheartofthehunchback.
SheislateraccusedofthemurderofPhoebus,whomFrollokilledinjealousy,andissentencedtodeathbyhanging.Quasimodosavesherbybringinghertothecathedralunderthelawofsanctuary.Frolloralliesthetruands(criminalsofParis)tochargethecathedral.Theking,seeingthechaos,vetoesthelawofsanctuaryandcommandshistroopstotakeheroutandkillher.WhenQuasimodoseesthetruands,heassumestheyaretheretohurtEsméralda,sohedrivesthemoff.FrollobetraysEsméraldabyhandinghertothetroopsandwatcheswhilesheishanged.QuasimodopusheshimfromNotre-Dametohisdeath.HethengoestoEsméralda’sgrave,liesnexttohercorpseandeventuallydiesofstarvation.Twoyearslater,excavationistsfindtheskeletonsofEsmeraldaandQuasimodolockedinanembrace.
