SirHughSeymourWalpole(1884-1941)wasanEnglishnovelist.HewasborninAucklandinNewZealandandeducatedinEnglandattheKing'sSchool,CanterburyandatEmmanuelCollege,Cambridge.Heworkedasateacherbeforeturningtowritingfulltime.HisfirstnovelwasTheWoodenHorse(1909),withFortitude(1913)hisfirstgreatsuccess.HeworkedfortheRedCrossinRussiaduringWorldWarI,experienceswhichfedhisTheDarkForest(1916)andTheSecretCity(1919).WalpolelivedatBrackenburnLodgeontheslopesofCatbellsintheLakeDistrictfrom1924tohisdeath.HerehewrotemanyofhisbestknownworksincludingthefamilysagaTheHerriesChronicle,comprisingRogueHerries(1930),JudithParis(1931),TheFortress(1932)andVanessa(1933).Walpole'sworkwasverypopular,andbroughthimgreatfinancialrewards.Hewasaprolificworkerwhoembracedavarietyofgenres.Healsowrote:ThePreludetoAdventure(1912),TheGoldenScarecrow(1915),TheCaptives(1920),andTheCathedral(1922).
