Thecareerofthefamousmanwhosenamestandsattheheadofthischapterisoneofthemostremarkableinthehistoryofhumanlearning.TheremayhavebeenotherdiscovererswhohavedonemoreforsciencethaneverPtolemyaccomplished,butthereneverhasbeenanyotherdiscovererwhoseauthorityonthesubjectofthemovementsoftheheavenlybodieshasheldswayoverthemindsofmenforsolongaperiodasthefourteencenturiesduringwhichhisopinionsreignedsupreme.Thedoctrineshelaiddowninhisfamousbook,TheAlmagest,prevailedthroughoutthoseages.Nosubstantialadditionwasmadeinallthattimetotheundoubtedtruthswhichthisworkcontained.NoimportantcorrectionwasmadeoftheseriouserrorswithwhichPtolemy'stheorieswerecontaminated.TheauthorityofPtolemyastoallthingsintheheavens,andastoagoodmanythingsontheearth(forthesameillustriousmanwasalsoadiligentgeographer),wasinvariablyfinal.
ThougheverychildmaynowknowmoreoftheactualtruthsofthecelestialmotionsthaneverPtolemyknew,yetthefactthathisworkexercisedsuchanastonishingeffectonthehumanintellectforsomesixtygenerations,showsthatitmusthavebeenanextraordinaryproduction.Wemustlookintothecareerofthiswonderfulmantodiscoverwhereinlaythesecretofthatmarvelloussuccesswhichmadehimtheunchallengedinstructorofthehumanraceforsuchaprotractedperiod. |
