人类对知识的保存及其选择,关乎集体记忆和社会的良性运转。然而知识的保存从来都不是容易之事,其过程之曲折往往引人叹息,损失之巨大又令人心碎。2000多年前亚述皇家图书馆的泥板历经战火和劫掠,享誉世界的亚历山大图书馆由于管理不善而衰落,亨利八世时代的宗教改革运动令英格兰的众多修道院罹难,纳粹对鲁汶大学图书馆以及犹太文化发动攻击,萨拉热窝的波黑国家与大学图书馆遭受了无谓的轰炸,作家们的遗留手稿面临着亲密之人的销毁……与已经失去的相比,我们保存下来的少之又少!

本书作者理查德·奥文登自2014年以来担任英国第二大图书馆博德利图书馆的馆长,他在《焚书:知识的受难史》中对知识保存的危机逐一进行了生动的描述和重现,不仅具有权威性,更传达了作为一名知识保存者的洞见和担忧。对于普通读者而言,这本“书之书”所具有的价值不仅在于讲述具体的历史事件,更在于唤起我们对知识存储和保护的清醒意识,特别是意识到在“互联网没有记忆”的时代个人与社会面临的危机。
