近几年来，台湾兴起了一些社会运动，其中以环保、妇女、劳工运动比较受到瞩目。值得注 意 的是，这些社会运动除了其明显的社会、政治意义之外，也是一个社会的“道德感性”发展 程度的指标，而其影响所及，更有助于培育社会成员的道德敏感度。对于各式各样、或隐或 显 出现在日常生活中的支配、压迫、歧视、剥削，虽然自己不一定是直接受害者，却仍有所意 识和反抗，需要我们能够对于他人身受的痛苦、屈辱、伤害有所意识和关切。这是一种极为 重要但也极为难得的能力，需要在社会生活和社会斗争中培养和训练。今天，台湾对于动物 处境有所关怀的人还很少。常听到的一个理由是：“人的事都管不完了，还能管动物呢?” 其实，正是因为动物“非我族类”，对于动物的痛苦能够有所意识、能够发挥道德的关怀， 所需要的道德敏感度更高，所要求于人设身处地的能力也愈多。培养对于动物的关怀，其实 是在促使整个社会的道德感性更普遍、更深入。在这个意义上，让动物解放运动成为台湾社 会运动的一环，是有重大意义的。
以上所言，一味强调动物解放议题对于本书读者或者社会的意义，似乎正好陷在本书所 批判的物种主义的窠臼里：我们鼓吹动物解放，究竟是为了人与社会的改善，还是为了帮助 无数身处苦痛煎熬、面对屠杀威胁的动物?请细心阅读本书，为自己找到答案。我个人 深深相信，说到最后，这两件任务其实是无法分开的。
