这个话题之所以长久没有定论，是因为战后禁闭营地的犯罪当事人几乎都没有受到审判。切斯瓦夫·根博尔斯基是拉姆斯多夫营地的指挥官，1956年曾经受到共产党当局的审讯，但最终无罪释放。1989年共产党统治结束后，拉姆斯多夫事件重启调查，2001年，根博尔斯基在奥波莱（Opole）出庭受审。然而，由于根博尔斯基与控方证人的健康状况同样糟糕，审判一再推迟，最后在2005年宣判。根博尔斯基于一年后死去。
所罗门·莫雷尔是兹哥达-希维托赫洛维采营地的指挥官，他同样设法逃脱了审判。共产党统治结束后，他移民到以色列，然后在此定居。波兰司法部申请将他引渡回国，但以色列只能驳回申请，因为根据以色列的时效法，犯罪时间已经超出了追诉期。[89]
这两个人以及其他数百名当事人，都应该在20世纪40年代受到起诉，但他们都侥幸过关，因为当局另有打算。波兰民族与其他承受过纳粹占领的民族一样，更加关注恢复民族权力，而非关注德裔平民的权利。这或许令人愤怒，但绝不令人意外。无论如何，战后的公正是高度主观的公正，很少会在我们如今习以为常的法律体制内行事。
无论是在波兰还是在东欧，这些事情都并非孤例。正如我将要说明的，同样的问题在欧洲大陆普遍存在。唯一不同的是，受罚者不是德意志人，而是与德意志人合作的人。
