代纽约人，我们看到自己的城市闪闪发光，看到灯光慢慢黯淡，又看
到它长久地坠入炼狱。如果在1990年死去，我们在闭眼前只会看到一
个被毒品、枪支和绝望污染的城市。不知怎的，我们的运气很好。我
们活了足够长的时间，看到这座城市汇集起意志与活力，又一次站了
起来。这座城市的居民找回了旧规矩。每一天，我们都能看到让人激
动的结果，有时也能看到细微的变化。我生活在纽约的这些年里，我
看到带着购物的女性出现，她们生锈的超市手推车上装满了塑料袋包
裹的物品。她们睡在街上，在角落里胡言乱语，数量越来越多而且无
处不在。可突然之间，她们全都消失了。原因很简单：那些女人是弱
者，她们被人抛弃，孤苦伶仃，但纽约部落的成员拯救了她们。
我再也没有看见过站街女，就连第十四街以南她们曾经大批聚集
的生肉市场都看不到她们的踪影了。每天傍晚时分，她们戴着巨大的
耳环和项链，向开车闲逛的郊区居民出卖自己的身体。妓女几乎都是
瘾君子，但当她们坐在车里时就会嘲笑车牌是蓝色的新泽西男人，称
他们“蓝傻子”。可在进行毫无愉悦可言的交易时，她们的街角上几
乎听不到笑声。当城市频发更野蛮、更严重的犯罪行为时，大多数警
察和法官在很多年里根本不在意她们。站街女似乎会永远与我们共
存，她们从19世纪初便成为纽约的一部分。可当20世纪变成21世纪
时，站街女们不见了。
我不知道她们去了哪里。有些肯定埋进了墓地。可我希望活着的
那些能够找到一个秘密的地方，远离毒品、皮条客和疾病。在我写下
这段文字时，如今在曼哈顿称得上站街客的人则都是烟鬼，因为法律
禁止他们在餐馆、酒吧和舞厅里吸烟，所以在温度降至零度以下的夜
晚，他们只能颤抖着聚集在室外一起吸烟。他们的声音在周围的建筑
物之间回荡，吵醒了疲劳一天正在昏睡的家庭。他们是新一代吵闹的
自恋狂，生活在城市执政者坚称“酒鬼也必须健康”的时代。有一件
事是肯定的：似乎没有掌权者记得禁酒令时代的教训。
曼哈顿岛在这个时期倒是充满活力。从这个角度看，时报广场又
一次成为最完美的符号：吵闹、人潮汹涌、谣言、粗俗、快速变化又
略带危险。我们也拥有其他符号。比如自由女神像，比如帝国大厦和
克莱斯勒大厦。可这些都是静止的，远离真实的人群，如今有太多时
候在保安的看守下对游客封闭。可就像纽约这座城市一样，时报广场
向所有人开放。
开放性就是生活在这里的关键要素。一切都是选择的结果。你可
以选择在弗里克美术馆看维米尔的作品，也可以选择在唐人街散步。
如果住在下城，那么上城也是你的，只需要乘地铁就可抵达。这本书
里提到的所有地方，还有更多的地方，皆是如此。曼哈顿的漫步者身
上一定带有某种天真，因为只有天真的眼睛才最能看清纽约。年轻年
老并不重要。阅读丰富的历史能让体验更加富有层次，但阅读不能替
代街头行走。不管是老人还是新来者，为了塑造属于自己的怀旧之
情，了解、吸收现在的城市精神至关重要。
这就是我总是敦促新来者全身心投入这座城市感受其魔力的原
因。忘记焦躁与偶尔的粗鲁吧，很多纽约人也在为此烦恼。相反，走
到北河边，坐在炮台公园西侧的长椅上。看潮起潮落，看冬天时海水
结成的冰块。这座岛上还没有人类踪影时，这样的景色就已经存在。
看着那些船。目光越过水面，看向自由女神像或埃利斯岛，也就是无
数纽约人为了真正过上生活而去过的地方。了解我们这个部落的故
事，因为无论你出生在哪里，这也是你的部落。听它的音乐，听传奇
的故事。看它的废墟和纪念碑。走在它的人行道上，用手指触摸我们
直角街道上的石头、砖块与钢铁。呼吸河上轻风吹来的空气。
抬头看：天空中又出现了隼，有害的滴滴涕终于离它们远去，度
过漫长的艰难时光之后，它们终于重新拥有了完整的生活。人们看到
它们在下城高楼的顶层之间飞翔，在魔法之城的尖顶之间穿梭，它们
也在那里筑巢、养育幼崽。它们飞过的地方，荷兰人曾经住过，戴着
假发的英国人曾经玩耍过，而非洲人在这些没有人身自由的街道上争
取过属于人类的权利。在上城探索时，人们能看到隼在尖顶、大桥和
数不清的屋顶之间，向北、向西、向东飞行。最开始，它们的飞行看
起来漫无目的。但你要保持耐心。在一天快要结束时，当太阳朝着新
泽西方向移动，天空突然变成红紫色时，你会看到隼在盘旋、转弯，
它们向着下城、向着家飞去。

这是一本在记忆、新闻报道和阅读基础上形成的书。其中很多阅
读，是在几十年时间里完成的。我自己的藏书中包含超过500本与纽
约城历史有关的书，另有传记、小说以及纽约的新闻报道合集。我拥
有很多纽约图册，还有大量报纸、杂志剪报。这些年里我还看过很多
