83. A Diary- the Winter Olympics

October 23rd Saturday Sunny

(S1)Last night, I watched the Winter Olympics on TV. (S2) The match was very exciting and what made me excited most was that all the teams were extremely excellent.

(S3)Of all the teams, our ski team, which skied very fast and jumped high, was surely the most outstanding one. (S4)We beat the French team, who beat us last time, and as a result, we won the gold medal. (S5)A young American girl, whose back was straight and arms were beautiful, performed amazingly. (S6)She was the last skier in the event and of course she won the gold medal.

(S7)I liked the skiing events very much. (S8)I saw a lot of good skiers, of whom the ones from America and Italy were the greatest. (S9)It was a pity that a boy from the German team had a bad fall and had his left leg injured, but he was so brave that he managed to cover all the course.(S10)I think I should learn from him.

84. A Report

(S1) It was 5:30 on the afternoon of December 12, 2001. (S2) I was riding along the Fifth Avenue towards the east. (S3) I saw, on the other side of the street, an elderly man came out of a grocery. (S4) He was trying to cross the street when a car suddenly made a right turn into the Fifth Avenue from Peace Street. (S5) It hit the old man. (S6) He fell down with a cry.

(S7) Instead of stopping for a look, the driver drove off at a greater speed heading west. (S8) What I noticed then is the following: the driver is a young woman, the car is yellow, and the plate number is BJ7899. (S9) I stopped a passing taxi and took the old man to the nearest hospital immediately. (S10) That's all.

(S4) It turned out that his right leg was broken. (S5) The doctor told me that he had to stay in bed for two weeks, and three days in hospital for observation. (S6) While the doctors and nurses were treating him, I called his parents and told them what had happened to Liu Wei. (S7) Half an hour later they arrived in the hospital. (S8) So he won't come to school these days. (S9) Of course he will miss the lessons these days. (S10) If you agree, we'll go to help him after class.

91. Dos and Don'ts for the 2008 Olympic Volunteers

(S1)It is reported that about 100,000 people will be chosen as volunteers for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. (S2)What should the volunteers do and what should they not do?

(S3)Firstly, they should be polite and friendly to the athletes and visitors from all over the world, and avoid improper behaviour. (S4)Secondly, they should stick to their posts, offering good service, satisfying any reasonable needs and being ready to help those in difficulty. (S5)And they should never fail to do their duty. (S6)Thirdly, they should introduce Chinese culture and history to foreigners so that they may know China better. (S7)And they should never say or do anything that harms the image of our motherland.

(S8)If I have the honour to be chosen as a volunteer, besides the above, I will work hard and creatively, but never be lazy. (S9)I will follow the law and discipline, but never break them. (S10)I will take the opportunity to make friends with the athletes and visitors, and help the 2008 Olympic Games be a great success.

92. Film or Book, Which do You Prefer?

(S1)Some of us think that it is better to see the film than to read the book in the original. (S2)The reason is that it takes less time to understand the whole story. (S3)Besides, the film is usually more interesting, and it is easier to follow.

(S4)Some others just have the opposite opinion. (S5)They think that they can get more detailed information from the original. (S6)Meanwhile, the language in the book is possibly more lively and beautiful.

(S7)Personally, I agree with the second view. (S8)Actually I have more reasons for it. (S9)I think I can stay at home, reading quietly in a situation of my own, and what's more, I am able to better understand the author's ideas. (S10)In a word, to read the original work is better than to see the film based on it.

93. Healthy Eating Habits

Dear friends,

(S1)As we all know, we are what we eat. (S2)Therefore, it's very important for us to form healthy eating habits. (S3)However, bad eating habits are still very common among our students. (S4)Some of us often go to school without breakfast; some like to have snacks; some care particular about food; and still some others eat or drink too much. (S5)All these bad habits will surely do harm to our health.

(S6)To keep fit, we should have various healthy diets, which generally include proper amounts of fish, meat, vegetables, fruit as well as main food. (S7)Besides, we'd better have meals regularly.

(S8)In my opinion, we should try to develop healthy eating habits to build up a strong body. (S9)Only in this way can we have enough energy to study better.(S10)That's all. Thank you!

94. My Teacher Mr. Moore

(S1)Of all my teachers, Mr. Moore is the one who impresses me most. (S2)Though he is 34,he looks very young for his age. (S3)And he's one of the most popular teachers in our school.

(S4)Compared with other teachers, Mr. Moore pays more attention to his way of teaching. (S5)He tries various ways to make his classes lively and interesting. (S6)In his opinion, we should not only know "What" but also understand "Why" (S7)So, instead of giving us answers immediately, he encourages us to think by ourselves whenever he puts forward questions. (S8)With his help, we've learned how to analyze and settle problems. (S9)What a wonderful world of "Why" he leads us to!

(S10)He is such a learned person that we all admire him very much.

97. The Holiday Plan

(S1)The summer holiday is coming. (S2)Our class have had a discussion about what to do during the holiday.

(S3)Some are in favor of staying at home. (S4)They think it's both convenient and comfortable. (S5)What's more, they can save money for other purposes. (S6)But they will lose the chance of getting to know the outside world. (S7)However, others prefer to go out for traveling since it can increase their knowledge and broaden their horizons. (S8)Of course they will spend more money and meet some difficulties while traveling.

(S9)In my opinion, it would be much better to stay at home. (S10)I can do many things as I like, such as reading, watching TV and help my parents with the housework.

99. A Letter to High School Students in Jiangsu

Dear fellow students,

(S1)Our government is aiming to build a "harmonious society",which is every citizen's duty to work hard to achieve this goal. (S2)As high school students, what should we do?

(S3)First of all, we should love our motherland. (S4)Let's take a great interest in the development of our hometowns and take an active part in our school and class activities.

(S5)Secondly, let's fill the world with love. (S6)We should show our respect for old people, our parents and our teachers and we should also care for each other and help those in need. (S7)Most important of all, all of us must be faithful and honest in our daily life.
