C．集体数词
523 有一类数词，叫作集体数词。它是一种形容词短语，多由“数词＋集体名词＋of”构成，表示一组人、动物或东西，如：Three parties of travellers arrived here today．There are several litters of pigs．就像在a number of students中，a number of修饰students，又像在a score of watermelons中，a score of修饰water melons一样，three parties of这一数词短语修饰后面的名词travellers，而several litters of修饰后面的名词pigs。这种用法和东方人（至少中国人）的思路是一致的。这种以of结尾的短语和以of开始的短语（如three bags of the travellers和a hundred families of this village）是完全不同的。后面这种修饰前面的名词，如of the travellers修饰bags，of this village修饰a hundred families。在three parties of travellers中，travellers是最重要的词，而在three bags of the travellers中，bags是最重要的词。（不过，如果以“名词＋of＋名词”作主语，谓语动词几乎总是和of前面的名词在数上一致，如：A litter of pigs is...，Three litters of pigs are...）
