VII Go to Bristol

Suppose her father turned her out of doors!

Suppose they did not believe him what would they do to him?

3) suggest, demand, insist, ask

She demanded that I pay her immediately.

He insisted that Jennie send her to dancing school.

It is suggested that we make a special study of the problem.

It was intended that you be the candidate.

It was proposed that this matter be discussed at the next meeting.

It is requested that a vote be taken.

It is important that he work hard.

It is essential that this mission not fail.

It is appropriate that this tax be abolished.

It's imperative that you (should) not be seen here.

It's vital to her health that she take this medicine.

It seems so unfair that this should happen to me.

1) as if, as though

a. I have loved you as if you were my son.

I remember it vividly as though it were tonight.

He behaves as if he owned the place.

b. He talks (talked) about Rome as though he had been there himself.

He looks (looked) as though he had known Millie for years.

在look, seem, taste, smell后,as if引导的从句中可以用陈述语气:

It looks as if they are in a terrible hurry.

It seems as if we shall have to walk.

The meat tastes as if it has gone bad.

as if (though)还可引导表语从句:

It is not as though we were poor.

You look as if you didn't care.

a. Though he be the President himself, he shall hear us.

Whether she be right or wrong, we will support her.

Whatever be the reasons for his action, we cannot tolerate such disloyalty.

Poor though you might be, you cannot live all your life on charity.

Try as I would, I cannot prevail upon him to follow my advice.

Though he is the President himself...

Whether she is right or wrong...

He left early in order that the children would not be alone in the house.

I lent him £50 so that he might go for a holiday.

I hired a boat so that I could go fishing.

He hurried on, lest she should meet him again.
