译后记
2004年，和北大钱理群先生有过一次电话长谈。钱先生兴致勃勃介
绍了他“认识脚下的土地”的构想和一些研究细节，并希望我能发挥自己
的外语所长，引介一些理论文献。为先生的热情所感染，我满口答应。
不曾料到的是：这次谈话把我这个偏安文学批评一隅的文体研究者引至
一个更大的学术领域，从相对自闭的新批评分析模型转向更为开放的文
化研究解释框架。
此前，我已经收到他的赠书《贵州读本》，对于先生的学术理念和
方法，有了一个比较入微的了解。何谓“阅读脚下的土地”，钱先生引而
不论，却为我后来的理论跟进预留了空间。当时，全球化话语的涡流席
卷中外学界至少有10年之久。阿帕杜莱就宣称全球化是所有学院人士的
焦虑之源。期间，相关议题、不同取向的研究势头猛烈，催化并繁衍了
一个庞大的学术谱系，产生很少的共识，却制造出更多的分歧。在此背
景下，对于“土地”以及与土地一词联结在一起的概念，诸如“本
土”、“地域”、“地方”的思考，则成为一种对立批评（antithetical
criticism），与全球化话语形成参照。
部分受爱德华·萨义德的“对位阅读”（countrapuntal reading）的启
发，部分受侯世达（Douglas R.Hoftstadter）写作方式的影响——他在
《哥德尔、艾舍尔、巴赫》（Godel，Escher，Bach）一书中，尝试了
一种他称之为不同寻常的结构：“在对话和章节之间有一种对位”——
[182] 研究生讨论课上，我会引导学生细读一部理论原文经典，同时配备
一部与其形成对立批评的著作进行对读，以期产生“思想对话，观念碰
撞，势均力敌”的复调叙述的效果。所以，2004年春季，在《西方正
典》（Western Canon）的讨论课上，我为哈罗德·布鲁姆这本书选定了
《贵州读本》。仅从二书的题目就可以想见它们的对称、对比乃至对峙
的关系——西方/非西方；中心/边缘；普世性/地方性；精英/草根……也
许，最重要的一组关系是：书写性文本/具象性土地。随着对读的深
入，我和学生一起发现了许多微妙之处，某种程度上实现了我的一个教
学计划：“表面上在谈论一个想法，但是实际上以稍稍隐蔽的方式在谈
论另一个想法”（侯世达语），但并未抵达我的目标：将钱先生“阅读脚
下的土地”这一学术意识发展成一种连贯性和解释性的体系。
其实，丰富的理论资源已经存在，只等我们适度地挪用，创造性地
借用。这就是方兴未艾的风景学（landscape studies）、地方研究（place
studies）和生态批评（ecocriticism）。三个业已壮大、貌似独立的学
科，其实与决定性地影响了20世纪80年代以来学术走向的人文地理学颇
多交错叠合之处。某种程度上，它们的核心概念、重要术语，乃至研究
方法都源自人文地理学，又融入派系纷繁的文化研究之中。简言之，它
们具有一切新兴学科的跨越性和模糊性；换言之，它们的疆界随着新的
关注、方法或问题的介入而在不断移动。在为“阅读脚下的土地”寻找理
论性支撑或解释性描述的过程中，我逐渐将范围锁定在与人文地理学瓜
葛甚深、近乎同构的风景学上，试图以此为基点展开纵深搜索。之所以
如此锁定，是因为在把“阅读脚下的土地”这个比较感性的表达切换到理
论层面时，我注意到美国学者皮尔斯·刘易斯（Peirce F.Lewis）在其
《阅读风景的原则》（AxiomsforReading the Landscape）一文中，提出
一个基本原则：“所有的人类风景，不管如何平常的风景，都有着文化
意涵，因此，沃兹M.ThielgaardWatts认为我们‘可以阅读风景，正如我们
能够阅读书本’。我们人类的风景是我们无意为之，却可触知可看见的
自传，反映出我们的趣味、我们的价值、我们的渴望乃至我们的恐
惧。”究其知识谱系，这一原则应该是人文地理学泰斗杰克逊
（J.B.Jackson，1909—1996）观点的翻新：“一本丰富而美丽的书总是在
我们面前打开，我们必须学会阅读它。”
我的一个假设是：既然风景（landscape）一词汇聚和裂变出的同义
词和近义词，如土地、地方、区域、空间、记忆、权力、栖居、家园、
身份、国族等已经成为当代各种社会理论的建构基础或参照框架，它也
应该能够成为一个理论棱镜，透过它可以观察作为一个地方的贵州、作
为风景的贵州、作为表述对象的贵州……
