译后赘语
爱氏语录终极版的翻译工作就要结束了。想把全书结构，也就是篇
章排序事宜，跟读者朋友们作一说明。我的想法是这样：
原书篇章，基本以英文字母顺序排列。至于译本，则似乎有三种排
列方式可供选择：一，依样葫芦，谨遵原序。有个旧译本就是这么做
的。斯为下策，我所不取，因其最没有道理也；二，师其意不师其制，
改依译文音序排。此法稍优，然仍不能无憾；三，所以，我琢磨着把原
序打乱重来，依各篇意义关系，排出新的、貌似有某种逻辑的秩序。如
此，说是打乱，做的好了，实为理顺。不知诸位读友以为然否？
那么，我们所谓的意义逻辑，究竟据何理路呢？我的意思是这样：
书有人以文传，有文以人传。爱氏的书，怕算是文以人传了。凡以
人传的书，读者重的是人，其次才是文。这恐怕也是我们读这本《语
录》的一般心态吧。我们先是会想，这是怎样一个人呢？然后才会想，
他做了什么，以及说了什么。美国建筑家莱特的夫人给莱特作传，就是
取名为Frank Lloyd Wright, His Life, His Work, His Words。相当于中国人
说的立身，立功，立言吧。古人还说，读其书，想见其为人。一般读书
如此，何况是这种以人传的书呢。所以，我们经理此书，也不妨大致照
这个路数，首其人，其家人，其朋友，次其功业，再次其观点言论。当
然，这必定是很相对的（任何划分都是相对的），因其功其言，正可以
反映其人；而其为人论人，往往即是其言其功。“论犹太人……与犹太
复国主义”一篇尤其是这样。参与犹太复国，是爱氏一生大功；而论起
他的人种、心理及立身之本，却必要追根于他是个犹太人。因此之故，
我们把这一篇，置于其人其功之间，我想还有点意思吧。于是，篇章排

第一篇“爱因斯坦论自己”，可归入第九组。首尾呼应，暗合于九九
归一。不知读者诸君觉得有意思否？
还得说下。有些篇目以“篇”名不以“论”名，如第一组的，是因为不
光是“论”这些人，还带写“给”这些人。再说下。杂论各节，由英文字母
顺序改为汉字音序，便查阅也。
然后要说说索引。原书有两个索引，一关键词索引，一事项（含人
名）索引，共22页之多。由于篇目次序变更，重做索引倍加困难，踌躇
之下，就径自省去了。
说到底，我们的想法，毕竟还是要把这本语录做成一本可读
的“书”，而不是做成一本可查的字典。文辞内容也好，排序也好，都是
向这个目标靠拢。作为一本书，一般读者自会满足于涵泳文义，领会爱
氏的人格与思想，而从中获得启迪和力量。如此，我们可以保证：我们
的译文当真“略有不同”。干脆可以说，在这个意义上，我们的译本，说
是“终极版”已经无多愧色。这样说来，省去索引，料也不是多么不可饶
恕的罪过吧。
何况，真做学问的，原不靠翻译。研究爱氏，固有《全集》、《档
案》，原书、原件俱在，我们的“书”，只要提供可靠的线索，让研究者
能顺藤摸瓜，查到原件，而让一般读者肯放心引用，也算可以了。我们
在各条所注出处中的人名、书名、报刊名、机构名……后边，基本（不
必要的除外）都随注了（原书里提供的）原文，就是这意思。
此次翻译，参考了范岱年先生所译《新爱因斯坦语录》（上海科技
教育出版社，2008），受益良多，特此致谢。（范先生的译文参考过许
良英先生的译文。）再就是要感谢我校我院西语系的张雄君，百忙之中
为我查考、斟酌一些德文名目的译法，解决了大问题。还要特别感谢我
校图书馆的胡水亮君。他一如既往，为我查找资料，并帮我扫描识别
了“科学……篇”的旧译本。（那是我最为畏难的部分，因自己缺乏科学
根底。这一篇对范岱年先生的旧译多所因依。这样一来，我的翻译，只
能说是“相对”纯手工的啦。）
另。我又将“朋友篇”的论主和受信人也按汉语音序排好，具见目
录。这样，多少也就减轻了未编索引的遗憾。有了这些，一般非学术型
的读者，也就可以满足了吧。
