Chapter 7

[kjv] And the men of Kirjathjearim came, and fetched up the ark of the LORD, and brought it into the house of Abinadab in the hill, and sanctified Eleazar his son to keep the ark of the LORD. [bbe] So the men of Kiriath-jearim came and took the ark of the Lord to the house of Abinadab in Gibeah, and they made his son Eleazar holy and put the ark in his care. [kjv] And it came to pass, while the ark abode in Kirjathjearim, that the time was long; for it was twenty years: and all the house of Israel lamented after the LORD. [bbe] And the ark was in Kiriath-jearim for a long time, as much as twenty years: and all Israel was searching after the Lord with weeping. [kjv] And Samuel spake unto all the house of Israel, saying, If ye do return unto the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the strange gods and Ashtaroth from among you, and prepare your hearts unto the LORD, and serve him only: and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines. [bbe] Then Samuel said to all Israel, If with all your hearts you would come back to the Lord, then put away all the strange gods and the Astartes from among you, and let your hearts be turned to the Lord, and be servants to him only: and he will make you safe from the hands of the Philistines. [kjv] Then the children of Israel did put away Baalim and Ashtaroth, and served the LORD only. [bbe] So the children of Israel gave up the worship of Baal and Astarte, and became worshippers of the Lord only. [kjv] And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD. [bbe] Then Samuel said, Let all Israel come to Mizpah and I will make prayer to the Lord for you. [kjv] And they gathered together to Mizpeh, and drew water, and poured it out before the LORD, and fasted on that day, and said there, We have sinned against the LORD. And Samuel judged the children of Israel in Mizpeh. [bbe] So they came together to Mizpah, and got water, draining it out before the Lord, and they took no food that day, and they said, We have done evil against the Lord. And Samuel was judge of the children of Israel in Mizpah. [kjv] And when the Philistines heard that the children of Israel were gathered together to Mizpeh, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And when the children of Israel heard it, they were afraid of the Philistines. [bbe] Now when the Philistines had news that the children of Israel had come together at Mizpah, the lords of the Philistines went up against Israel. And the children of Israel, hearing of it, were full of fear. [kjv] And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines. [bbe] And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Go on crying to the Lord our God for us to make us safe from the hands of the Philistines. [kjv] And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him. [bbe] And Samuel took a young lamb, offering all of it as a burned offering to the Lord; and Samuel made prayers to the Lord for Israel and the Lord gave him an answer. [kjv] And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel. [bbe] And while Samuel was offering the burned offering, the Philistines came near for the attack on Israel; but at the thunder of the Lord's voice that day the Philistines were overcome with fear, and they gave way before Israel. [kjv] And the men of Israel went out of Mizpeh, and pursued the Philistines, and smote them, until they came under Bethcar. [bbe] And the men of Israel went out from Mizpah and went after the Philistines, attacking them till they came under Beth-car. [kjv] Then Samuel took a stone, and set it between Mizpeh and Shen, and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the LORD helped us. [bbe] Then Samuel took a stone and put it up between Mizpah and Jeshanah, naming it Eben-ezer, and saying, Up to now the Lord has been our help. [kjv] So the Philistines were subdued, and they came no more into the coast of Israel: and the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel. [bbe] So the Philistines were overcome, and did not come into the country of Israel again: and all the days of Samuel the hand of the Lord was against the Philistines. [kjv] And the cities which the Philistines had taken from Israel were restored to Israel, from Ekron even unto Gath; and the coasts thereof did Israel deliver out of the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. [bbe] And the towns which the Philistines had taken were given back to Israel, from Ekron to Gath, and all the country round them Israel made free from the power of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. [kjv] And Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life. [bbe] And Samuel was judge of Israel all the days of his life. [kjv] And he went from year to year in circuit to Bethel, and Gilgal, and Mizpeh, and judged Israel in all those places. [bbe] From year to year he went in turn to Beth-el and Gilgal and Mizpah, judging Israel in all those places. [kjv] And his return was to Ramah; for there was his house; and there he judged Israel; and there he built an altar unto the LORD. [bbe] And his base was at Ramah, where his house was; there he was judge of Israel and there he made an altar to the Lord.

Chapter 8

[kjv] And it came to pass, when Samuel was old, that he made his sons judges over Israel. [bbe] Now when Samuel was old, he made his sons judges over Israel. [kjv] Now the name of his firstborn was Joel; and the name of his second, Abiah: they were judges in Beersheba. [bbe] The name of his first son was Joel and the name of his second Abijah: they were judges in Beer-sheba. [kjv] And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment. [bbe] And his sons did not go in his ways, but moved by the love of money took rewards, and were not upright in judging. 8:4 [hgb] 以 色 列 的 长 老 都 聚 集 , 来 到 拉 玛 见 撒 母 耳 , [kjv] Then all the elders of Israel gathered themselves together, and came to Samuel unto Ramah, [bbe] Then all the responsible men of Israel got together and went to Samuel at Ramah, 8:5 [hgb] 对 他 说 , 你 年 纪 老 迈 了 , 你 儿 子 不 行 你 的 道 。 [kjv] And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. [bbe] And said to him, See now, you are old, and your sons do not go in your ways: give us a king now to be our judge, so that we may be like the other nations. [kjv] But the thing displeased Samuel, when they said, Give us a king to judge us. And Samuel prayed unto the LORD. [bbe] But Samuel was not pleased when they said to him, Give us a king to be our judge. And Samuel made prayer to the Lord. [kjv] And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. [bbe] And the Lord said to Samuel, Give ear to the voice of the people and what they say to you: they have not been turned away from you, but they have been turned away from me, not desiring me to be king over them. [kjv] According to all the works which they have done since the day that I brought them up out of Egypt even unto this day, wherewith they have forsaken me, and served other gods, so do they also unto thee. [bbe] As they have done from the first, from the day when I took them out of Egypt till this day, turning away from me and worshipping other gods, so now they are acting in the same way to you. [kjv] Now therefore hearken unto their voice: howbeit yet protest solemnly unto them, and shew them the manner of the king that shall reign over them. [bbe] Give ear now to their voice: but make a serious protest to them, and give them a picture of the sort of king who will be their ruler. 8:10 [hgb] 撒 母 耳 将 耶 和 华 的 话 都 传 给 求 他 立 王 的 百 姓 , 说 , [kjv] And Samuel told all the words of the LORD unto the people that asked of him a king. [bbe] And Samuel said all these words of the Lord to the people who were desiring a king. [kjv] And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots. [bbe] And he said, This is the sort of king who will be your ruler: he will take your sons and make them his servants, his horsemen, and drivers of his war-carriages, and they will go running before his war-carriages; 8:12 [hgb] 又 派 他 们 作 千 夫 长 , 五 十 夫 长 , 为 他 耕 种 田 地 , 收 割 庄 稼 , 打 造 军 器 和 车 上 的 器 械 。 [kjv] And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots. [bbe] And he will make them captains of thousands and of fifties; some he will put to work ploughing and cutting his grain and making his instruments of war and building his war-carriages. [kjv] And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers. [bbe] Your daughters he will take to be makers of perfumes and cooks and bread-makers. [kjv] And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants. [bbe] He will take your fields and your vine-gardens and your olive-gardens, all the best of them, and give them to his servants. [kjv] And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants. [bbe] He will take a tenth of your seed and of the fruit of your vines and give it to his servants. [kjv] And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work. [bbe] He will take your men-servants and your servant-girls, and the best of your oxen and your asses and put them to his work. [kjv] He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants. [bbe] He will take a tenth of your sheep: and you will be his servants. [kjv] And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day. [bbe] Then you will be crying out because of your king whom you have taken for yourselves; but the Lord will not give you an answer in that day. 我 们 定 要 一 个 王 治 理 我 们 , [kjv] Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us; [bbe] But the people gave no attention to the voice of Samuel; and they said, No, but we will have a king over us, 8:20 [hgb] 使 我 们 像 列 国 一 样 , 有 王 治 理 我 们 , 统 领 我 们 , 为 我 们 争 战 。 [kjv] That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles. [bbe] So that we may be like the other nations, and so that our king may be our judge and go out before us to war. [kjv] And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD. [bbe] Then Samuel, after hearing all the people had to say, went and gave an account of it to the Lord. [kjv] And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city. [bbe] And the Lord said to Samuel, Give ear to their voice and make a king for them. Then Samuel said to the men of Israel, Let every man go back to his town.

Chapter 9

[kjv] Now there was a man of Benjamin, whose name was Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Bechorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a mighty man of power. [bbe] Now there was a man of Benjamin named Kish, the son of Abiel, the son of Zeror, the son of Becorath, the son of Aphiah, a Benjamite, a man of wealth. [kjv] And he had a son, whose name was Saul, a choice young man, and a goodly: and there was not among the children of Israel a goodlier person than he: from his shoulders and upward he was higher than any of the people. [bbe] He had a son named Saul, a specially good-looking young man; there was no one better-looking among the children of Israel: he was taller by a head than any other of the people. [kjv] And the asses of Kish Saul's father were lost. And Kish said to Saul his son, Take now one of the servants with thee, and arise, go seek the asses. [bbe] Now the asses of Saul's father Kish had gone wandering away. And Kish said to his son Saul, Take one of the servants with you, and get up and go in search of the asses. [kjv] And he passed through mount Ephraim, and passed through the land of Shalisha, but they found them not: then they passed through the land of Shalim, and there they were not: and he passed through the land of the Benjamites, but they found them not. [bbe] So they went through the hill-country of Ephraim and through the land of Shalishah, but they saw no sign of them: then they went through the land of Shaalim, but they were not there: and they went through the land of the Benjamites, but they did not come across them. [kjv] And when they were come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to his servant that was with him, Come, and let us return; lest my father leave caring for the asses, and take thought for us. [bbe] And when they had come to the land of Zuph, Saul said to the servant who was with him, Come, let us go back, or my father may give up caring about the asses and be troubled about us. 9:6 [hgb] 仆 人 说 , 这 城 里 有 一 位 神 人 , 是 众 人 所 尊 重 的 , 凡 他 所 说 的 全 都 应 验 。 [kjv] And he said unto him, Behold now, there is in this city a man of God, and he is an honourable man; all that he saith cometh surely to pass: now let us go thither; peradventure he can shew us our way that we should go. [bbe] But the servant said to him, See now, in this town there is a man of God, who is highly honoured, and everything he says comes true: let us go there now; it may be that he will give us directions about our journey. [kjv] Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we? [bbe] Then Saul said to his servant, But if we go, what are we to take the man? all our bread is gone, and we have no offering to take to the man of God: what are we to do? 9:8 [hgb] 仆 人 回 答 扫 罗 说 , 我 手 里 有 银 子 一 舍 客 勒 的 四 分 之 一 , 可 以 送 那 神 人 , 请 他 指 示 我 们 当 走 的 路 。 [kjv] And the servant answered Saul again, and said, Behold, I have here at hand the fourth part of a shekel of silver: that will I give to the man of God, to tell us our way. [bbe] But the servant said in answer, I have here a fourth part of a shekel of silver: I will give that to the man of God, and he will give us directions about our way. ) [kjv] (Beforetime in Israel, when a man went to enquire of God, thus he spake, Come, and let us go to the seer: for he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer.) [bbe] (In the past in Israel, when a man went to get directions from God, he said, Come let us go to the Seer, for he who now is named Prophet was in those days given the name of Seer.) 9:10 [hgb] 扫 罗 对 仆 人 说 , 你 说 的 是 , 我 们 可 以 去 。 [kjv] Then said Saul to his servant, Well said; come, let us go. So they went unto the city where the man of God was. [bbe] Then Saul said to his servant, You have said well; come, let us go. So they went to the town where the man of God was. [kjv] And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here? [bbe] And when they were on the way up to the town, they saw some young girls going out to get water and said to them, Is the seer here? [kjv] And they answered them, and said, He is; behold, he is before you: make haste now, for he came to day to the city; for there is a sacrifice of the people to day in the high place: [bbe] And they said, He is; in fact he is before you: go quickly now, for he has come into the town today, for the people are making an offering in the high place today: 9:13 [hgb] 在 他 还 没 有 上 丘 坛 吃 祭 物 之 先 , 你 们 一 进 城 必 遇 见 他 。 [kjv] As soon as ye be come into the city, ye shall straightway find him, before he go up to the high place to eat: for the people will not eat until he come, because he doth bless the sacrifice; and afterwards they eat that be bidden. Now therefore get you up; for about this time ye shall find him. [bbe] When you come into the town you will see him straight away, before he goes up to the high place for the feast: the people are waiting for his blessing before starting the feast, and after that the guests will take part in it. So go up now and you will see him. [kjv] And they went up into the city: and when they were come into the city, behold, Samuel came out against them, for to go up to the high place. [bbe] So they went up to the town, and when they came inside the town, Samuel came face to face with them on his way to the high place. 9:15 [hgb] 扫 罗 未 到 的 前 一 日 , 耶 和 华 已 经 指 示 撒 母 耳 说 , [kjv] Now the LORD had told Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came, saying, [bbe] Now the day before Saul came, the word of God had come to Samuel, saying, 9:16 [hgb] 明 日 这 时 候 , 我 必 使 一 个 人 从 便 雅 悯 地 到 你 这 里 来 , 你 要 膏 他 作 我 民 以 色 列 的 君 。 [kjv] To morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin, and thou shalt anoint him to be captain over my people Israel, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines: for I have looked upon my people, because their cry is come unto me. [bbe] Tomorrow about this time I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and on him you are to put the holy oil, making him ruler over my people Israel, and he will make my people safe from the hands of the Philistines: for I have seen the sorrow of my people, whose cry has come up to me. 9:17 [hgb] 撒 母 耳 看 见 扫 罗 的 时 候 , 耶 和 华 对 他 说 , 看 哪 , 这 人 就 是 我 对 你 所 说 的 , 他 必 治 理 我 的 民 。 [kjv] And when Samuel saw Saul, the LORD said unto him, Behold the man whom I spake to thee of! this same shall reign over my people. [bbe] And when Samuel saw Saul, the Lord said to him, This is the man of whom I gave you word! he it is who is to have authority over my people. [kjv] Then Saul drew near to Samuel in the gate, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, where the seer's house is. [bbe] Then Saul came up to Samuel in the doorway of the town and said, Give me directions, if you will be so good, to the house of the seer. [kjv] And Samuel answered Saul, and said, I am the seer: go up before me unto the high place; for ye shall eat with me to day, and to morrow I will let thee go, and will tell thee all that is in thine heart. [bbe] Then Samuel said to Saul, I am the seer; go up before me to the high place and take food with me today: and in the morning I will let you go, after opening to you all the secrets of your heart. [kjv] And as for thine asses that were lost three days ago, set not thy mind on them; for they are found. And on whom is all the desire of Israel? Is it not on thee, and on all thy father's house? [bbe] As for your asses which have been wandering for three days, give no thought to them, for they have come back. And for whom are all the desired things in Israel? are they not for you and your father's family? [kjv] And Saul answered and said, Am not I a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? wherefore then speakest thou so to me? [bbe] And Saul said, Am I not a man of Benjamin, the smallest of all the tribes of Israel? and my family the least of the families of Benjamin? why then do you say these words to me? 9:22 [hgb] 撒 母 耳 领 扫 罗 和 他 仆 人 进 了 客 堂 , 使 他 们 在 请 来 的 客 中 坐 首 位 。 [kjv] And Samuel took Saul and his servant, and brought them into the parlour, and made them sit in the chiefest place among them that were bidden, which were about thirty persons. [bbe] Then Samuel took Saul and his servant into the guest room, and made them take the chief place among all the guests who were there, about thirty persons. [kjv] And Samuel said unto the cook, Bring the portion which I gave thee, of which I said unto thee, Set it by thee. [bbe] And Samuel said to the cook, Give me that part which I gave you orders to keep by you. [kjv] And the cook took up the shoulder, and that which was upon it, and set it before Saul. And Samuel said, Behold that which is left! set it before thee, and eat: for unto this time hath it been kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people. So Saul did eat with Samuel that day. [bbe] And the cook took up the leg with the fat tail on it, and put it before Saul. And Samuel said, This is the part which has been kept for you: take it as your part of the feast; because it has been kept for you till the right time came and till the guests were present. So that day Saul took food with Samuel. [kjv] And when they were come down from the high place into the city, Samuel communed with Saul upon the top of the house. [bbe] And when they had come down from the high place into the town, where a bed was made ready for Saul, he went to rest. [kjv] And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. [bbe] And about dawn Samuel said to Saul on the roof, Get up so that I may send you away. So Saul got up, and he and Samuel went out together. [kjv] And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on), but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God. [bbe] And on their way down to the end of the town, Samuel said to Saul, Give your servant orders to go on in front of us, (so he went on,) but you keep here, so that I may give you the word of God.
