[Synopsis]
ThestorytakesplaceinthecontextofhistoricaleventsinMiddle-earth.LongbeforethestartofthenoveltheDarkLordSauronforgestheOneRingtogainpoweroverotherringsheldbytheleadersofMen,ElvesandDwarves.Heisdefeatedinbattle,andIsildurcutsoffhisRingandclaimsitasanheirloomforhisline.IsildurislaterkilledbyOrcs,andtheRingislostintheriverAnduin.Overtwothousandyearslater,theRingcomesintothehandsofthehobbitSméagol,whohidesunderthemountains,wheretheRingtransformshimoverthecourseofhundredsofyearsintoasuspicious,corruptedbeingcalledGollum.EventuallyhelosestheRing,and,asrecountedinTheHobbit,itisfoundbyBilboBaggins.MeanwhileSaurontakesanewphysicalformandreoccupiesMordor,hisoldrealm.GollumsetsoutinsearchoftheRing,butiscapturedbySauron,wholearnsthatBilbohastheRing.Gollumissetloose,andSauron,whoneedstheRingtoregainhisfullpower,sendsforththeRingwraiths,hisdark,fearsomeservants,toseizeit.
ThenovelbeginsintheShire,asFrodoBagginsinheritstheRingfromBilbo.Bothareunawareofitsorigin,butGandalftheGrey,awizard,learnsoftheRing'shistoryandadvisesFrodototakeitawayfromtheShire.Frodoleaves,takinghisgardenerandfriend,Samwise(Sam)Gamgee,andtwocousins,Meriadoc(Merry)BrandybuckandPeregrin(Pippin)Took,ascompanions.TheynearlyencountertheRingwraithswhilestillintheShire,butshakeoffpursuitbycuttingthroughtheOldForest,wheretheyareaidedbytheenigmaticandpowerfulTomBombadil.AfterleavingtheForest,theystopinthetownofBree,wheretheymeetAragorn,Isildur'sheir,whojoinsthemasguideandprotector.TheyleaveBreeafternarrowlyescapingattack,buttheRingwraithsfollowthemtothelook-outhillofWeathertop,andwoundFrodowithamagicalblade.AragornleadsthehobbitstowardtherefugeofRivendell,whileFrodograduallysuccumbstothewound.AttheFordofBruinen,theRingwraithsattackagain,butfloodwaterscontrolledbyElrond,masterofRivendell,riseupandoverwhelmthem,savingthecompany.
FrodorecoversinRivendellunderthecareofElrond.TheCouncilofElrondrevealsmuchsignificanthistoryaboutSauronandtheRing,aswellasthenewsthatSauronhascorruptedthewizardSaruman.TheCouncildecidesthatthethreatofSauronistoogreatandthatthebestcourseofactionistodestroytheRingbyreturningittoMountDoominMordor,whereitwasforged.FrodovolunteerstotaketheRing,andaFellowshipoftheRingischosentoaccompanyandprotecthim:Sam,Merry,Pippin,Aragorn,Gandalf,GimlitheDwarf,LegolastheElf,andthemanBoromir,sonoftheRulingStewardDenethoroftherealmofGondor.
ThecompanypassthroughtheMinesofMoria,wheretheyareattackedbyOrcs.GandalfperisheswhilefightingtheancientandterribleBalrog,allowingtheotherstoescape.TheremainingcompanytakerefugeintheElvenforestofLothlórien.WithboatsandgiftsfromtheLadyGaladriel,thecompanythentraveldowntheRiverAnduintothehillofAmonHen.ThereBoromirsuccumbstothelureoftheRingandattemptstotakeitfromFrodo,whobreaksfromtheFellowshiptocontinuethequesttoMordoralone,thoughSaminsistsoncomingtoassistandprotecthim.
Meanwhile,orcssentbySauronandSarumankillBoromirandkidnapMerryandPippin.Aragorn,GimliandLegolaspursuetheorcsintothekingdomofRohan.MerryandPippinescapewhentheorcsareslainbytheRohirrim.ThehobbitsfleeintoFangornforest,wheretheyarebefriendedbythetree-likeEnts.InFangornforestAragorn,GimliandLegolasfindnotthehobbitsbutGandalf,resurrectedafterhisbattlewiththeBalrogandnowthesignificantlymorepowerfulGandalftheWhite.GandalfassuresthemthatMerryandPippinaresafe,andtheytravelinsteadtorouseThéoden,KingofRohan,fromastuporofdespairinflictedbySaruman,andtoaidtheRohirriminastandagainstSaruman'sarmies.ThéodenmakesastandatthefortressofHelm'sDeep.GandalfridesofftogathermoresoldierswhileAragorn,Legolas,andGimliridewithThéodentoHelm'sDeep.Theyarebesiegedbyorcs,butGandalfarriveswithreinforcements,andtheorcsaredefeated.
TheEntsattackIsengard,trappingSarumaninthetowerofOrthanc.Gandalf,ThéodenandtheothersarriveatIsengardtoconfrontSaruman.Sarumanrefusestoacknowledgetheerrorofhisways,however,andGandalfstripshimofhisrankandmostofhispowers.MerryandPippinrejointheothersandPippinlooksintoapalantír,aseeing-stonethatSauronhadusedtocommunicatewithSaruman,unknowinglyleadingSaurontothinkthatSarumanhascapturedtheRing-bearer,soGandalftakesPippintoGondor.
OntheirwaytoMordor,FrodoandSamcaptureGollum,whohasbeenfollowingthemfromMoria,andforcehimtoguidethemtoMordor.FindingMordor'smaingateimpassable,theytraveltowardapassknowntoGollum.GollumbetraysFrodobyleadinghimtothegreatspiderShelobinthetunnelsofCirithUngol.FrodoisleftseeminglydeadbyShelob'sbite,butSamfightsheroff.SamtakestheRing,andforceshimselftoleaveFrodo.OrcsfindFrodo'sbody,andSamlearnsthatFrodoisnotinfactdead,butunconscious.FrodoiscarriedtothetowerofCirithUngol,andSamdeterminestorescuehim.
SauronbeginshismilitaryassaultuponGondor.GandalfarrivesatMinasTirithinGondorwithPippin,toalertDenethoroftheimpendingattack.MinasTirithisbesieged,andDenethor,undertheinfluenceofSauronthroughanotherpalantír,loseshopeandcommitssuicide.Aragorn,LegolasandGimlicometoGondorbythePathsoftheDead,whereAragornraisesanundeadarmyofoath-breakersinfulfilmentofanoldprophecy.TheghostlyarmyhelphimtodefeattheCorsairsofUmbarinvadingsouthernGondor,andtheforcesfreedfromthesouth,alongwithRohan'scavalry,helpbreakthesiegeatMinasTirith.
SamrescuesFrodo,andtheyjourneythroughMordor.FrodoweakensastheynearMountDoom,butisaidedbySam.Meanwhile,intheclimacticbattleattheBlackGateofMordor,thevastly-outnumberedallianceofGondorandRohanfightdesperatelyagainstSauron'sarmies,withtheintentofdivertingSauron'sattentionfromMountDoom.AttheedgeoftheCracksofDoom,FrodoisunabletoresisttheRing,andclaimsitforhimself.However,Gollumreappears,struggleswithFrodofortheRing,andbitesoffFrodo'sfinger,Ringandall,butinsodoingfallsintothefire,takingtheRingwithhim.TheRingisthusunmade.Intheinstantofitsdestruction,Sauronperishes,hisarmiesretreat,histowercrumblesintodust,theRingwraithsdisintegrate,andtheWaroftheRingseeminglyends.AragorniscrownedElessar,KingofArnorandGondor,andmarrieshislong-timelove,Arwen,thedaughterofElrond.
Meanwhile,however,SarumanhasescapedhiscaptivityandenslavedtheShire.Thefourreturninghobbitsraisearebellionandoverthrowhim.SarumaniskilledbyhisformerservantGrímaWormtongue,whoisinturnkilledbyHobbitarchers.TheWaroftheRingthuscomestoitstrueendonFrodo'sverydoorstep.MerryandPippinareacclaimedheroes.SamuseshisgiftsfromGaladrieltorestoretheShire,andmarriesRosieCotton.Frodoremainswoundedinbodyandspirit,andsomeyearslater,accompaniedbyBilboandGandalf,sailsfromtheGreyHavenswestovertheSeatotheUndyingLandstofindpeace.Samreturnshome,andeventuallybecomesMayoroftheShire.AfterRosie'sdeath,SamgiveshisdaughtertheRedBookofWestmarch,containingthestoryofBilbo,Frodo,Sam,PippinandMerry.HecrosseswestovertheSea,thelastoftheRing-bearers.
