ThenoveltellsofayoungmannamedDorianGray,thesubjectofapaintingbyartistBasilHallward.BasilisimpressedbyDorian'sbeautyandbecomesinfatuatedwithhim,believinghisbeautyisresponsibleforanewmodeinhisart.DorianmeetsLordHenryWotton,afriendofBasil's,andbecomesenthralledbyLordHenry'sworldview.Espousinganewhedonism,LordHenrysuggeststheonlythingsworthpursuinginlifearebeautyandfulfillmentofthesenses.Realizingthatonedayhisbeautywillfade,DorianexpresseshisdesiretosellhissoultoensuretheportraitBasilhaspaintedwouldageratherthanhimself.Dorian'swishisfulfilled,plunginghimintodebauchedacts.Theportraitservesasareminderoftheeffecteachacthasuponhissoul,witheachsindisplayedasadisfigurementofhisform,orthroughasignofaging.
