EDITORIALNOTE.
AlthoughinsomerespectsmoretechnicalintheirsubjectsandstylethanDarwin'sJournal,thebooksherereprintedwillneverlosetheirvalueandinterestfortheoriginalityoftheobservationstheycontain.Manypartsofthemareadmirablyadaptedforgivinganinsightintoproblemsregardingthestructureandchangesoftheearth'ssurface,andinfacttheyformacharmingintroductiontophysicalgeologyandphysiographyintheirapplicationtospecialdomains.Thebooksthemselvescannotbeobtainedformanytimesthepriceofthepresentvolume,andboththegeneralreader,whodesirestoknowmoreofDarwin'swork,andthestudentofgeology,whonaturallywishestoknowhowamastermindreasonedonmostimportantgeologicalsubjects,willbegladoftheopportunityofpossessingtheminaconvenientandcheapform.
Thethreeintroductions,whichmyfriendProfessorJuddhaskindlyfurnished,givecriticalandhistoricalinformationwhichmakesthiseditionofspecialvalue.
