ChronologicallyStrongasDeath/FortcommelaMort(firstpublishedin1889)isthepenultimatenovelbyMaupassantandthesubject-matterofhislateliteraryproductionswasmuchmorenarrowthanthatofhisearlyones.Theplotinwhichapainterfirstfallsinlovewithacountess,butlateristormentedbyhisloveforherdaughter,becausethedaughterbearsaphysicalresemblanceofthemother(inherjuvenileperiodthedaughterlookedabsolutelyidenticaltothemother,whenthepainter'slovetowardthelatterstartedtogrow)givesalotofmaterialformusingonthetopicoflove.ThetitleisborrowedfromtheBible,wheretheloveissaidtobeasstrongasdeath.Nevertheless,themainideahereseemstobenotthatpeopleofarttendtofalldesperatelyinloveandthattheirlovemaytakeeccentricforms,butthatdelvingintosomethingmonotonousallowsnoroomfornoveltyand,consequently,maydestroycreativeforces.
HenriRenAlbertGuydeMaupassant(1850-1893)wasapopular19th-centuryFrenchwriter.Heisoneofthefathersofthemodernshortstory.AsaprotgofFlaubert,hisshortstoriesarecharacterizedbytheireconomyofstyleandtheirefficienteffortlessdnouement.In1880hepublishedhisfirstmasterpiece,BouledeSuif,whichFlaubertcharacterizeditasamasterpiecethatwillendure.ThiswasMaupassant'sfirstpieceofshortfictionandwasfollowedbyshortstoriessuchasDeuxAmis(1882)andMademoiselleFifi(1882).Healsowrotesixshortnovels.Anumberofhisstoriesoftendenotethefutilityofwarandtheinnocentcivilianswho,caught,emergechanged-manyaresetduringtheFranco-PrussianWarofthe1870s.Inhisnovels,heconcentratedallhisobservationsscatteredinhisshortstories.HissecondnovelwasBel-Ami;or,TheHistoryofaScoundrel,whichcameoutin1885.Hisotherworksinclude aMaisonTellier(1881),UneVie(1883),MissHarriet(1884),Mont-Oriol(1887),PierreetJean(1888),FortCommelaMort(1889)andNotreCoeur(1890).
