PREFACE
IntheensuingvolumeIhaveattemptedtogiveadefinedandpermanentformtoavarietyofthoughts,whichhaveoccurredtomymindinthecourseofthirty-fouryears,itbeingsolongsinceIpublishedavolume,entitled,theEnquirer,--thoughts,which,iftheyhavepresentedthemselvestoothermen,have,atleastsofarasIamaware,neverbeengiventothepublicthroughthemediumofthepress.DuringapartofthisperiodIhadremainedtoac*****iderabledegreeunoccupiedinmycharacterofanauthor,andhaddeliveredlittletothepressthatboremyname.--AndIbegthereadertobelieve,that,sinceIenteredin1791uponthatwhichmaybec*****ideredasmyvocationinlife,Ihavescarcelyinanyinstancecontributedapagetoanyperiodicalmiscellany. |
