WilliamWellsBrown(1814-1884)wasaprominentabolitionistlecturer,novelist,playwright,andhistorian.BornintoslaveryintheSouthernUnitedStates,BrownescapedtotheNorth,whereheworkedforabolitionistcausesandwasaprolificwriterandlecturer.In1847,hepublishedtheNarrativeofWilliamW.Brown,aFugitiveSlave,WrittenbyHimself,whichbecameabestsellersecondonlytoFrederickDouglass'narrative.Hewasalsoapioneerinseveraldifferentliterarygenres,includingtravelwriting,fiction,anddrama,andwrotewhatisconsideredtobethefirstnovelbyanAfricanAmerican:Clotel;or,ThePresident'sDaughter(1853).However,becausethenovelwaspublishedinEngland,thebookisnotthefirstAfrican-AmericannovelpublishedintheUnitedStates.MostscholarsagreethatBrownisthefirstpublishedAfrican-Americanplaywright.Hewrotetwoplays,TheExperience;or,HowtoGiveaNorthernManaBackbone(1856)andTheEscape;or,ALeapforFreedom(1858).Brownalsowroteseveralhistoricalworks,including:TheBlackMan:HisAntecedents,HisGenius,andHisAchievements(1863),TheNegrointheAmericanRevolution(1867)andTheRisingSon(1873).
