In1915,Lawrence'sfrankrepresentationofsexualityinTheRainbowcausedafuroreandthenovelwasseizedbythepoliceandbannedalmostassoonasitwaspublished.TodayitisrecognisedasoneoftheclassicEnglishnovelsofthetwentiethcentury.TheRainbowisaboutthreegenerationsoftheBrangwenfamilyofNottinghamshirefromthe1840stotheearlyyearsofthetwentiethcentury.WithinthisframeworkLawrence'sessentialconcerniswiththepassionallivesofhischaractersasheexploresthepressuresthatdeterminetheirlives,usingareligioussymbolisminwhichthe'rainbow'ofthetitleishisunifyingmotif.Hisprimaryfocusisontheindividual'sstruggletogrowthandfulfilmentwithinmarriageandchangingsocialcircumstances,aprocessshowntogrowmoredifficultthroughthegenerations.YoungUrsulaBrangwen,whosestoryiscontinuedinWomeninLove,isfinallythecentralfigureinLawrence'sanatomyoftheconfiningstructuresofEnglishsociallifeandtheimpactofindustrialisationandurbanisationonthehumanpsyche.
