INTRODUCTION

Doesschoolpreparechildrenfortherealworld?Studyhardandgetgoodgradesandyouwillfindahigh-payingjobwithgreatbenefits,myparentsusedtosay.Theirgoalinlifewastoprovideacollegeeducationformyoldersisterandme,sothatwewouldhavethegreatestchanceforsuccessinlife.WhenTfinallyearnedmydiplomain1976-graduatingwithhonors,andnearthetopofmyclass,inaccountingfromFloridaStateUniversity-myparentshadrealizedtheirgoal.Itwasthecrowningachievementoftheirlives.InaccordancewiththeMasterPlan,IwashiredbyaBig8accountingfirm,andIlookedforwardtoalongcareerandretirementatanearlyage.
Myhusband,Michael,followedasimilarpath.Webothcamefromhard-workingfamilies,ofmodestmeansbutwithstrongworkethics.Michaelalsograduatedwithhonors,buthedidittwice:firstasanengineerandthenfromlawschool.HewasquicklyrecruitedbyaprestigiousWashington,D.C.,lawfirmthatspecializedinpatentlaw,andhisfutureseemedbright,careerpathwell-definedandearlyretirementguaranteed.
Althoughwehavebeensuccessfulinourcareers,theyhavenotturnedoutquiteasweexpected.Webothhavechangedpositionsseveraltimes-foralltherightreasons-buttherearenopensionplansvestingonourbehalf.Ourretirementfundsaregrowingonlythroughourindividualcontributions.
MichaelandIhaveawonderfulmarriagewiththreegreatchildren.AsIwritethis,twoareincollegeandoneisjustbeginninghighschool.Wehavespentafortunemakingsureourchildrenhavereceivedthebesteducationavailable.
Onedayin1996,oneofmychildrencamehomedisillusionedwithschool.Hewasboredandtiredofstudying.WhyshouldIputtimeintostudyingsubjectsIwillneveruseinreallife?heprotested.
Withoutthinking,Iresponded,Becauseifyoudon'tgetgoodgrades,youwon'tgetintocollege.
