Nobody’sBoy(SansFamille),isanovelbytheFrenchauthorHectorMalot(1830–1907).Itwasoriginallypublishedin1878,andcontainstwovolumes–bothtellingoftheexploitsofalittleboynamedRémi(anorphansoldtoastreetmusicianattheageofeight),andhissearchforhisfamily.Malotwasanimmenselyskilledauthor,penningoverseventybooksinhislifetime,aswellastrainingasalawyerandworkingasadramaticcritic.AlthoughSansFamilehassincegainedfameasachildren’sbook,itwasnotoriginallyintendedassuch.



ThestoryofNobody’sBoyisaccompaniedbytheheart-warmingcolourillustrationsofJohhnyGruelle(1880–1938).GruellewasanAmericanartist,cartoonist,illustratorandchildren’sauthor–bestknownasthecreatorofRaggedyAnnandRaggedyAndy.HismostfamousillustratedworksincludeGrimm’sFairyTales(1914),AllAbouttheLittleSmallRedHen(1917),andofcourse,theRaggedyAnnseries.Presentedalongsidethetext,hisillustrationsfurtherrefineandelucidateMalot’smasterfulstorytelling.
