ThisearlyworkbyEdgarWallacewasoriginallypublishedin1926andwearenowrepublishingitwithabrandnewintroductorybiography.'TheTerriblePeople'isaclassicmysterynovelbythispioneerofthedetectivegenre.RichardHoratioEdgarWallacewasborninLondon,Englandin1875.HereceivedhisearlyeducationatSt.Peter'sSchoolandtheBoardSchool,butafterafreneticteensinvolvingarashengagementandfrequentlychangingemploymentcircumstances,Wallacewentintothemilitary.HeservedintheRoyalWestKentRegimentinEnglandandthenaspartoftheMedicalStaffCorpsstationedinSouthAfrica.WhilstintheBalkanscoveringtheRusso-JapaneseWar,WallacefoundtheinspirationforTheFourJustMen,publishedin1905.Overtherestofhislife,Wallaceproducedsome173booksandwrote17plays.Thesewerelargelyadventurenarrativeswithelementsofcrimeormystery,andusuallycombinedabombasticsensationalismwithhammyviolence. |
