Olive(EmiliaAlbertina)Schreiner,Mrs.Cronwright(alsowroteas:RalphIron)(1855-1920)wasaSouthAfricanauthor,pacifistandpoliticalactivist.In1867shemovedtoCradockwithherolderbrother.WhenherbrotherleftCradock,Olivechosetobecomeagoverness.Sheacceptedpostsasagovernessatanumberoffarms,mostnotablytheFouchswhoprovidedinspirationforcertainaspectsofTheStoryofanAfricanFarm(1883),publishedunderthepseudonymRalphIron,aswellasasmallcollectionofstoriesandallegoriescalledDreamLifeandRealLife:ALittleAfricanStory(1893).However,Olive'sambitionsdidnotlieinwriting.By1880,sheappliedtotheRoyalInfirmaryinEdinburghtobetrainedasanurse,butherill-healthpreventedherfromcompletingthetraining.Shereturnedhomein1889,whereshefeltextremelyalienatedfromthepeoplearoundher.Inanattempttoreconnectwithhersurroundings,shebecameincreasinglyinvolvedinlocalpoliticsandproducedaseriesofarticlespublishedposthumouslyasThoughtsonSouthAfrica(1923).Herotherworksinclude reams(1891)andWomanandLabour(1911). |
