WashingtonIrving(1783-1859)wasanAmericanauthoroftheearlynineteenthcentury.BestknownforhisshortstoriesTheLegendofSleepyHollowandRipvanWinkle,hewasalsoaprolificessayist,biographerandhistorian.HespokefluentSpanish,whichservedhimwellinhiswritingsonthatcountry,andhecouldreadseveralotherlanguages,includingGermanandDutch.HisfirstbookwasAHistoryofNew-YorkfromtheBeginningoftheWorldtotheEndoftheDutchDynasty,byDiedrichKnickerbocker.HetravelledontheWesternfrontierinthe1830sandrecordedhisglimpsesofWesterntribesinATouronthePrairies.HespokeagainstthemishandlingofrelationswiththeNativeAmericantribesbyEuropeansandAmericans.HepopularizedthenicknameGothamforNewYorkCity,andiscreditedwithinventingtheexpressiontheAlmightydollar. |
